Back to school season is definitely here as the past few weeks has been super busy for the Council and for our schools. At Council, we have been busy with providing training throughout the summer and into September. If any of our PTA leaders missed one of our training, we do have officer handbooks for the position of President, Treasurer, Secretary, Auditor, Membership (being revised) and new for 2016-2017, Principal, most of these handbooks are also translated in Spanish. They are free for our PTA leaders can can be picked up at our office in Old Town during our office hours. We can provide one-on-one training by request, you can visit us during our office hours (which are staffed by volunteers that serve on the board), or contact us. I would also like to point out that California State PTA is holding a Regional Leadership Conference for Southern California on October 1, registration online is open until September 23 (mail-in registration is due by 5 pm to the State office), and if you register and attend yowebsite.
This year is also Election year and this is another great opportunity for PTAs to engage with their communities by encouraging them to register and to vote. But, as a reminder, PTA is a non-partisan non-profit organization and does not endorse individual candidacy but can endorse initiatives that have an impact on education and health and well-being of all children. The California State PTA has released which propositions they support which in turn authorizes PTA Units, Councils, and District PTAs to show their support of these propositions. In short, the California State PTA supports Proposition 51, 55, 56, 56, 58, and 63. To find out more about these propositions and other state level advocacy efforts, visit the California State PTA's Advocacy page. If you have a question about local propositions, be sure to contact our Vice President of Legislation, Derick Boerner at firstname.lastname@example.org.
In addition to helping at training for our officers, managing the overall operation of one of the largest Council PTAs in California, and answering inquiries daily, I do get to speak on behalf of our children in San Diego and spoke at the first Board Meeting for the San Diego Board of Education on September 13, 2016 where I spoke to remind the SDBOE on the mission of PTA, some of the efforts of SDUCPTA, and comment on agenda items in the context of PTA. I feel that this is going to be a great year for Family Engagement as the SDUCPTA will continue to support our schools as well as the San Diego Unified School District's efforts to improve on Family Engagement which will ultimately have a positive impact on our children and student learning outcomes.
I look forward to the many things to come during my final year as President of SDUCPTA and I hope to see our PTA Unit Presidents at our first General Meeting for the 2016-2017 year on September 26, 2016 starting at 6:30 pm (meet and greet at 5:30 pm!). We have several speakers lined up to speak on updates for the SDUSD, fundraising opportunities, education enrichment opportunities, as well as conduct our business.
As always, I am here to help, please feel free to contact me!
