July 2016 marks the beginning of a new fiscal year for many PTA Units and for me, the beginning of the second year of my term. We at Council have spent the past month working on updating contact information for PTA units and we are still missing some rosters of PTA Unit Boards for the 2016-2017 year. I cannot stress enough how important it is that units submit their updated contact information to the Council as ultimately it does come down to a compliance issue. We need the updated contact information in order to send the information up the PTA channels to make sure units are in good standing, not just with PTA but with regulatory agencies such as the IRS and the California Attorney General Office for example.
One way to be on the path of a successful year is to understand what is your role in whatever position you hold with your PTA Unit. SDUCPTA has some upcoming training opportunities that I highly recommend PTA Unit Presidents to attend and encourage their board members to a participate in. The first is for PTA Unit Presidents at our what has become an annual signature event, the Back-to-School Breakfast being held on August 10 starting at 8 am at the Ballard Center. I am very excited about this event as we'll present tips on building effective PTA-School partnerships to benefit all children and programs PTAs can do at their schools. I am most excited about a partnership that I've been working on with Broadway San Diego where we'll be presenting the Ben Vereen Awards Wellness Through The Arts program where Ben Vereen himself will share a few words of inspiration. Following the breakfast event will be a training for PTA Unit Presidents at the Council office.
The next training opportunity will be at our Leadership Essentials training to help PTA Units get off to a smart start. This is a free training opportunity to help PTA Unit board members understand the role of President, Treasurer, and Secretary. The training is being held at the California Coast Credit Admin Office in Serra Mesa. There will be light refreshments provided but no childcare is available. The Council will have additional training in September specifically for officer positions.
Lastly, I want to mention that there are lots of resources available at the California State PTA's website and National PTA's website to help prepare you for the new school year. Do not forget that the first day of school for SDUSD is August 29, 2016!
I hope to see you at our Back-to-School Breakfast in August!
