President's Message - February 2017

February marks a special time for PTA and in 2017 we celebrate 120 years that PTA has worked toward bettering the lives of every child
in education, health and safety.  F
ounders’ Day (February 17) is when we celebrate the legacy and work of our founders—Alice McLellan Birney, Phoebe Apperson Hearst and Selena Sloan Butler—to better the lives of every child.  It is a time of reflection and to celebrate the accomplishments of PTA and to draw on inspiration on how we can continue to improve the lives of children everywhere.  I encourage each and every PTA in San Diego to take the time to do something to celebrate this occasion and it can be simple or grand.  One of the things that drew me to PTA is the amount of resources that are available  at my fingertips.  As a PTA Unit President, I used the ideas of Take Your Family to School Week to plan and implement family and community outreach events to benefit the students and the families of my school. Remember that the mission of PTA is to make every child’s potential a reality by engaging and empowering families and communities to advocate for all children.   Your PTA can do something as easy as sponsor "Coffee with the Principal" to planning a multicultural event.  Or maybe your PTA is already doing something but didn't realize it falls under the category of family and community engagement.

The National PTA has many fun, pre-planned family education events for you to choose from to help you plan a great event for your school.  Check out some of the ideas listed below:
  • Family Reading Experience (Powered by Kindle): Engage the whole family in reading activities. (Grades K-5)
  • The Smart Talk: Create a family agreement together outlining the ground rules for how children will use their smartphones and devices safely and responsibly. (Grades K-12)
  • Safety Toolkit: Use a series of lesson plans and take-home tip sheets to teach families about poison, fire, playground and bike safety. (Grades K-5)
  • Multicultural Event Guide: Plan an event where students, families and school staff are educated about the various cultures represented within your school community. (Grades K-12)
  • Creative Career Fair Event Guide: Help connect a student’s current interest in the arts with tomorrow’s career potential. (Grades K-12)
  • Host healthy events like a health fair, fun , healthy cooking class or playground clean up. (Grades K-12)

The great thing about utilizing the resources from different channels of PTA is that a lot of the ideas are planned out for you, including program guides to customizable flyers to help with marketing of the activity.  I am by no means saying it is always easy, but you don't have to try and reinvent the wheel if you are not familiar with planing and implementing an activity.  I have often said that San Diego Unified Council of PTAs has I.D.E.A.S where we offer and draw on Inspiration for our PTA units, we celebrate the Diversity not only among our board but also among our PTAs, we are here to help our schools be Engaged, we continue to Advocate for all children, and we are here to offer Sustainability for our PTAs to continue year after year.

If you ever need assistance, Council Board members along with the members of the Leadership Team are here to help, we can even assist with elections.  Just contact us at info@sdcouncilpta.org or call (619) 297-7821.
